very slow start up and shut down can any one help?

How long have you have the laptop? Do you have any other symptoms of viruses/malware/adware/etc. on the machine? This is the first thing to check and see if there is something malicious slowing you down.

If not, a few more things you can try:

1. Running a program like CCleaner to clear up temporary files and repair registry values to speed up you computer.
2. Use MSCONFIG to disable some startup programs to save system resources. Here are some instructions on that.
3. Defragment your Hard Drive (not guaranteed to help, but can't hurt either)

Give that a shot and let me know what happens.
