Some water fell on my macbook as it was running. I left it to dry thoroughly and it worked again, except for the battery: mac os x displays an X on its icon, saying there is no battery. Thinking that the battery got damaged by the water, I bought a new battery but the icon remains.
Do you know what else could have been destroyed by the water, that would explain the damage?

On the MacBook, the circuits responsible for charging the battery are located pretty much under the middle of the keyboard. Most likely, the water got into these circuits and damaged them. You'll need to have a technician open the system up to examine the motherboard and see if it can be repaired. I actually had this problem happen to me, and I was able to repair a couple of circuits using conductive ink, applied using a single hair (the circuits are nearly microscopic).
Let me note that in my case, it seemed like soda that was spilled, which is much more corrosive than water. Pure water shouldn't actually do any damage, so it's remotely possible in your case that all the water simply hasn't dried up yet. Or it's possible that the motherboard may simply need cleaning. But it's also possible that damage may have occurred.

I'm trying to avoid having to replace the full logic board so i've replaced the magsafe Connector Board, but it didn't solve the issue. Now, i've ordered a new battery connector in the hope the problem was there. But the more i think of it, the more it seems to me the connector is just an evolved piece of cable and shouldn"t be damaged by the water. So i'll keep your suggestion i nmy mind when i reopen the board when my replacement piece arrives.

Look on the bottom of your case for a model number that looks like Axxx. Or remove the battery and look in the compartment for your specific machine info. We need this to direct you to the correct part.
