I bought an enclosure, however I cannot get it to pop up in the my computer folder. Do I have to install software/drivers for it? I dont understand how to make it show up in My PC

You need to run Disk Management. Available under "Administrative Tools".

Have you reformatted it using Disk Utility?

I have one in an external case, reformatted to HFS+ (used to be in a PC) and it runs fine.

As to what case (the cable goes to the case) it will work in any case that you can connect to your Mac, so Thunderbolt, Firewire or USB 3, even USB 2 but that would be pointless as it would make a very fast drive run very slow.

All you need is a external hard drive enclosure . This video guides you through the process its for a 3.5 hd but a 2.5 ssd is the same procedure .

You may want to look at a dual interfaced enclosure like this one: OWC Mercury On-The-Go. Here you get the faster FireWire 800 which your system uses as well as USB 2.0/3.0 for use in a newer system.

If the hard drive is not recognized when you plug it into your USB you need to go into your Device manager and initialize the SSD. The same way you would set up a brand new hard drive out of the box when you install it on your computer. It needs to be initialized before it is recognized or has the ability for use on your computer. You can also set it up as a storage bin in device manager. That is the way I always do it anyways, Or you can purchase a duel interface casing as mentioned in previous comment a while ago. It has been a while since this comment was posted, so I’m sure you figured it out by now.

Be aware that the SSD may consume more current than most USB ports are capable of providing and that would explain why the disk is not seen by the computer, or in my case, why the disk disconnects when in heavy usage. My 850 SSD states 1.4A peak current. My USB ports can only provide 900mA. It seems now I need to find out an external closure with two USB 3.0 connections, or maybe get a 3.1/USB-C enclusure and upgrade my Mac. Sorry, not a solution, just more details on the possible issue.
