My iPod Classic is corrupted. Any more troubleshooting suggestions?

My iPod Classic 120GB corrupted it's file system after syncing it with iTunes. It turns into 0 kb free. I want to know your opinions based on my research and troubleshoots that I've done if you think it's the hard drive who has the problem.

MY IPOD CLASSIC:

  • It can still be connected to the computer and says "Connected".
  • No sad face on start up (usually shows up when you have bad hard drive or corrupt software.)
  • Boots ok but 0KB free.
  • It has RAW file system now (corrupt).
  • iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod, so no "Restore" option is appearing.
  • It doesn't save my settings every restart (e.g Language)
  • When connected to Windows it says "You need to format before using..." and ends up with "Windows could not complete the format." after pressing "Format".
  • I can start games but shuts down when I'm going to enter my name.
  • I can still go to Disk Mode.
  • It doesn't hang, still scrollable and selectable.

TROUBLESHOOTING I'VE DONE

  • Downloaded and used third party tools like "HP USB Disk Partitioner" "Fat32 GUI Format"

-> HP USB DISK PARTITIONER Result: "The media is write-protected"

-> Fat32 GUI Format Result: "Data Error: Cyclic rebundancy check" (signs of hdd problems)

-> CHKDSK Result: "Chkdsk cannot access RAW file system format."

  • I can still hear the HDD spinning.
  • Recharged it, battery is okay.
  • Changed USB cable, cable is okay.
  • Did the following formatting on Disk Mode, still same result.

I'm starting to think that my iPod's HDD is the main problem but, anyone got any troubleshooting ideas, repair suggestions, tools or softwares to check if it's really the HDD? or opinions based on these symptoms?

Thank you so much.

  1. Reset your iPod - Press Menu and Center Button for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON then release the buttons. Select you language.
  2. Connect your iPod to a high power USB 2.0 Port and not to any USB hub. (if you using a Mac, not on the Keyboard USB port)
  3. If iTunes opens, restore the iPod

Yes, I already did that, still iTunes doesn't open because Windows is interfering to format first the iPod before using the iPod.

Also a quick follow up update, I left my iPod in Disk Mode connected to my computer for a few minutes to an hour when suddenly iTunes detected my iPod and says it needs to be restored but I've got an error message regarding my connection "connection reset" which I restarted our router and also my computer. After the restart, iTunes again couldn't detect my iPod.

A bad move has been made and still I'm here, waiting for iTunes to detect the iPod.

Now you are at checking that the USB port on the computer is known good (works with another device), and clean all connectors. Then confirm the data cable is known good (swap it out with a new one). If none of those is the problem, it may be time to change the logic board in the iPod.

Ok thanks for the heads up, I'll be getting a brand new cable and test it out with my friend's computers. A question, how do we determine if it's the HDD or the Logic Board of the iPod is the problem? Since for me it sounds like the HDD is the one whose having a problem since it has Format and Memory issues, but, how do we tell the problem between HDD and Logic Board? Thank you.

Hey billy, did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I've just found my old iPod classic 80gb and it has very similar problems to the ones yours did. (won't show on iTunes, boots with 0kb free, can go into disk mode, cannot format)

Was it just the HDD or was it the logic board?

Would love to get it fixed and don't want to get the wrong parts.

Also thinking of getting the https://www.iflash.xyz/store/iflash-solo...

Cheers!
