I seem to have damaged the micro USB port. It still takes a charge but won't work properly with any peripherals, e.g. it only works sometimes with a keyboard, and only if I jiggle it into place.

How hard would it be to do this repair myself?

Depends on how much patience and experience you have doing such things. It only takes a simple jerk of the hand and you could break somethingm taking of the screen in my experience is extremely difficult, only because it and the touch pad are extremely fragile. If you can, pay a professional to do it.
