What is the max memory?

What is the maximum memory for an early 2008 iMac? macsales.com shows a 6GB kit. Crucial only shows a 4GB kit.

Standard RAM: 1 GB Maximum RAM: 6 GB*

Details: By default, 1 GB of RAM was installed as a single SO-DIMM module. One slot free.

*Apple officially supports 4 GB of RAM, but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 6 GB of RAM using one 2 GB and one 4 GB SO-DIMM module.

  • Details: Supports 800 MHz PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM (200-pin SO-DIMM).

Would it not depend on what OS your using as an OS older than snow leopard would only be 32 bit and therefore only use 4gb

@jimfixer Jim - a rather obscure issue as the EFI firmware updates with almost any system upgrade. It may not use 64bit without an update but can you give a link as the where it would not see the RAM? I am not aware of that. Thanks

@mayer Cant actually give a link on this one I was taught in school that any 32bit system mac or pc was only capable of using around 3.5gb of ram anything more would be a waste you can install it but it wont use it and the old leopard OS was 32 bit Ive always just accepted this as fact if you can show me different I will accept it as a new leaning life lesson. Never beyond learning new things

4GB is the official max, but 6GB works. It's a matter of what Apple says it supports and what it will actually recognize in real life.
