desoldering battery when repairing to avoid shorting out

Hi, ive decided to desolder the battery at all three points before starting any repair work on any ipods, but just wondered if i actually had to desolder all three pads or weather just desoldering the +positive for instance on its own would stop any chance of a shortage too. Can anyone in the know answer this question? Thanks
