What kind of glue to reattach back

My wife's Apple Watch has had the case back come off when she removes it from the charging puck. Apple wants $199 to repair it. We paid $249 new, so I don't consider that to be a reasonable cost. I would like to know what kind of glue would work best to reattach the back.

The adhesive strips you mention are for the front of the watch not the back. What adhesive can you use for the back?

I have this problem too. Out of warranty and Apple wants $199 to fix. Is there a glue that will work?

I just fixed my little sister Watch she had the same problem and all I did was used a little bit of super glue around the edges and it works good as new

Also, beware if the back falls off and you send it in for repair. I sent mine in and they tore the watch apart only to tell me it's not under warranty. Now I have a watch with the back and front off and Apple refuses to fix what they did. Guess I'm gluing both.

T-8000, Strong adhesive by MMOBIEL works great. Used on Series 1 with no problem, and easy to dispense due to needle like dispensing tube.

My back fell off as well. I've searched online for a fix, but only found the gasket for the front. Since I have the 1st gen watch, i'm out of warranty. So, I went with a more robust solution instead of hot glue that I've seen some people mention online. Go to amazon and pick up some RTV. Search "Permatex 81158 Black Silicone Adhesive Sealant, 3 oz. Tube" on Amazon.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1) Buy the RTV (its less than $6)

Step 2) Power off the watch. Remove the watch straps (may not be needed, but I didn't like them flapping around)

Step 3) Using a wooden toothpick (so you dont scratch anything) try and clean up any original adhesive from Apple. Dont worry, it comes off easy... that's why the back fell off remember? haha

Step 4) Using another wooden toothpick, dip into the RTV tube and blot/paint around the inner portion of the circumference of the inner opening. Dont worry if you get a little in the watch as it is a natural insulator

Step 5) Verify the cable from the back of the watch is still properly connected to the main housing and press the back down on and straighten if necessary.

Step 6) Place the watch face down on a flat surface (i used my mouse pad) and then set another flat weight on top of the back (I used an old 3.5" hard drive I had laying around) overnight.

Step 7) Turn on watch and enjoy!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If anyone is interested in seeing the specs of the RTV, then here ya go:

Permatex Black Silicone Adhesive Sealant is a general-purpose, black RTV indoor/outdoor sealant. Effectively bonds, repairs, seals, mends and secures glass, metal, plastics, fabric, vinyl, weather stripping and vinyl tops. Also protects and repairs electrical wiring and may be applied to horizontal or vertical surfaces. Waterproof and flexible with a temperature range of -75 degrees Fahrenheit to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, this sealant is oil, water, weather, vibration and grease resistant. Suggested applications include windshields, door frames, electrical connections, seams and roofs, vinyl tops, and weather stripping.

Thanks buddy. Great comment!

Thanks for the great tip. The back of my 1st Gen watch just came off this morning when I took it off the charger. This seems like a much cheaper repair solution than the $199 quoted by Apple... yikes!

They quoted me $249! I told them I could buy a new one at BestBuy for that amount, but they said, "Well, that's not the STAINLESS STEEL model that you have." REALLY?!! I LOVE THIS SITE! This is why I have a bench and a lighted magnifier!

Is this good for gluing the screen back? the shipping coast for iFixit's adhesive strip for my country is outrageous, I wonder if this is too much of a permanent seal, since the battery might need to be replaces at some point.

Same issue, screen came off for no appartent reason. After reading all the comments - here is my fix riding on the shoulders of all those before me. I used a q-tip and a toothpick with a little bit of nail polish remover to clean both surfaces (face and case). I used UHU Max Repair glue. The thinner the layer the stronger the bond. Using a toothpick to put a very thin layer on the bottom edge of the glass screeen only. Since the glue is at max strength after 24 hrs. I used a 3.5 harddrive (it was handy and suggested) as a weight for 24 hrs. No clean up necessary. Polished watch with a mircofiber cloth and all good to go. Apple should be ashamed to have one of their products fail due to poor gluing. They should fix these watches no matter the time passed since purchase, with an apology for the inconvience. Very poor quality considering the cost of these watches.

I've seen zero applicable responses. What keeps the back attached?

This didn't work for me. Tried 3 times....never stayed adhered.

B6000/B7000 adhesive or superglue is the best to put the back on if it comes off. Unfortunately, the repair and the battery are more costly than the watch. Both glues can be removed if needed. The installation technique is to trial run for three times, watch the cable and the two wires (be very careful) and line up the sensors with the watch orientation, and glue once (like measure three times and cut once). Using a very light and thin coat of glue on the watch case not the back bezel and then hold together for about 10 minutes (placing upside down with a book or other weight…I just held it together) putting even wait on the back bezel and the watch. Ta - Done!

It does not make sense that Apple charges some significant cash for their watch and can’t find a way to fasten the back bezel a little bit better, and fix it for a reasonable cost (why not just give anyone $199 off on a new one!!!). CoM-mm-Mon Apple.

If your screen popped off, it’s probably because you have a swollen battery. If you don’t replace the battery, it will just happen again. So take advantage of the fact that your screen is popped off (it’s a pain in the neck to get off otherwise) and change out the battery. You can get a replacement battery here on iFixit or from Amazon. THEN you can glue your screen back on.

ditch the adhesive sticker. The RTV sealant is superior in every way and can be applied to both 38mm and 42mm watches

agree. The adhesive is a joke.

Thanks! I'm going to go buy some and try this now. I know it's been a couple of years since your post, but I guess I was lucky mine lasted this long. @jaywuzherealso

Hello Dave,

First let me mention I have absolutely no experience repairing Apple Watches, so don't consider me an expert!

That said, the material I would choose for this job would be a light and flexible epoxy such as Zhanlida B7000. We use this quite often for sealing camera lenses on iPhones as well as replacing any failed adhesive between the cover glass and the plastic frame on any model of iPhone screen. It is durable, water resistant when applied correctly to properly cleaned surface, and any excess adhesive that leaks out of the watch can be scraped away by your fingernail if you just let it dry for 10 minutes first. Manufacturer recommended curing time would be 24 hours, but it would reach 90 strength it you give it 4-6 hours. The device should be very lightly and even clamps during this time.

Some adhesives that come to mind are E6000 and J-B Weld. These two are water resistant/sweat and heat resistant. And they both are some of the strongest bonding alternatives. I'd say fix with this first or find an epoxy that'll withstand water/heat wear and tear.

Bought the watch adhesive here but mucked it up on the first attempt. I used jewelry glue and reattached. Now the test of time. My battery wasn’t swollen.
