very slow if I am copying files into it

I tried to copy files into my external hard drive but it is very slow and it will copy half way and stop.

what could be wrong with if as I just formatted it?

Can you tell us what your system is as well as the interface you are using (USB2 or USB3, FireWire, eSATA, or Thunderbolt).

my system is Dell latitude/D620 and I am using USB2
