blue screen and gray screen

Every time I boot my Mac it gives me the apple logo at the beginning but then it turns gray and freezes and sometimes it reboot it self. I have tried to booth in verbose mode, as well as in Single mode, I can booth but that's it, I can't go further than that. Also in repair mode it loads but when I start doing something it gives me a blue lined screen, all the time. I can't access the hardware test mode, ando sometimes, in normal mode, it starts but when i finally get inside the OS, it gives me a few minutes and the blue screen appears every time. I'm deducting it probably will be the GPU, also I have found that this model had defective ones, is my assumption correct?

Thanx in advance for the help!

Do you have a friend who has a Mac? If you do see if you can connect your system to his using either a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable, then boot up your system in Target mode. Going to your friends computer you should see your Mac as if it where an external drive. Now run Disk Utility from your friends Mac so you can repair the drive permissions and well as the physical disk its self. Are you able to get that far?

Unfortunately I think is the graphic card too..

One chance to test is the health of your hard drive in case bad sector could leas the OS the bad kext read..

If you can test your Imac this way, prepare a usb thumb with the OS installer using diskmaker x from another mac and a formatted usb external drive and try to install the OS on it.

The first attemp to boot to the usb thumb will show you simptomps and probably won't be able to install anything 'cause of the bad graphic cards but If your system go ahead try to full install the OS and see what happen at the first boot..

If the gpu is gone and you're out of warranty the Last resort solution would be to teard down the logic board from the Imac and bake it into the oven as for macbook pro logic board, depends on your skill..

I cross my finger for you.. Let me know..

@ghostmik - Yes, this could be a bad GPU board (which is replaceable) but more likely this is a bad North Bridge chip given the symptoms. If he can get to his HD and check it that would be the clue. Sadly baking the logic board won't help here.
