Sunroof will not close

When I press the button to close my sunroof, all it does is make a clicking sound. How do I fix this?

Here's a fix on how to get it closed before it rains: 1991 Camry: How can I manually close my sunroof

The motor is probably good. It may be stripped gears or broken gears or the cable that goes from the motor to the gears. Did this failure happen all at once or was it progressive?
