What part of the phone controls service and reception?

I have an Apple iPhone 3GS. I gave it to a friend to switch the housing and I do not know ehere he went wrong but when i recieved the phone back I could not get even get one bar of service or reach the internet with my SIM card. Everything works perfectly fine on the phone, except the phone and service itself. Screen, speakers, apps, speed all there but no phone calls or internet. Any clue what piece inside the phone would need to be replaced so I could get it to be more than an ipod again?

Part of dock connector has antenna on it. connector 7.Does it recognize sim as could also be sim needs cleaning or prongs in sim tray are flattened. Also check small gold antenna thhat connects to metal bezel is making good contact (near connector 7 and "do not remove"(warranty) sticker)... This is most likely error when replacing motherboard in case

The reason I ask, is because I have taken apart a few iphone 3GS now...and every time I put them together I get less reception. I put all the screws back exactly where they go, I wear gloves... I make sure the connector near the dock is touching... I just can't figure it why I am losing reception...

I think its the "do not remove" sticker :-) It has it printed on there ;-)

oldturkey is right.. i mean the "do not remove" sticker, not do not remove the sticker! you may find that the way you are lifting your board out of the case is flexing/stressing the trace filaments inside the board. I've had plenty of repair jobs where signal is lost or lower where this is the case... that wing with the antenna connection on it takes a little bit of manoeuvring to get out and sometimes either the gold "wing" or the trace are damaged.
