Why is my power adapter over heating

This can be caused by a number of things but first suspect the adapter and/or the battery it's charging. How old is the adapter that's overheating? How old is the unit you're charging? Power adapters normally get "warm" but not 'hot'. Try a different (or new) adapter and if you have the same problem then it's your iPAD and I would definitely replace the battery first. If this is a new unit and under warranty then take call the company first and explain the problem. Even though it's a broad answer I hope this helps.
