Why does my bop-it button not work during the game?

While I'm playing the game, I hit the bop it button when prompted, but the device doesn't register the input. Any suggestions?

Assuming that the batteries are working (it registers other inputs and makes noise), I would recommend following the troubleshooting guide for replacing the internal electronic button.
