Upgrade Mac Pro Late 2013 CPU with Core i7-6900K
Is it possible to put a Core i7-6900K into a Mac Pro Late 2013?
That's the one:

If not, is there a similar CPU that would work?

The correct CPU for your Mac Pro system would be this one: Intel Xeon Processor E5-1680 v2 (25M Cache, 3.00 GHz): 8 Cores - 16 threads. And here is the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: Mac Pro Late 2013 CPU Replacement.

What do you mean by correct? Would the CPU that I showed work in the Mac Pro? It's the same socket.
Sorry no, the chip you selected requires the newer rev of the socket: FCLGA2011-3 Vs FCLGA2011 the Mac Pro system has.
Ahh, that makes sense thank you. But how can these Benchmarks exist then?

Is there a consumer class (cheaper) 8-core that would work with the Mac Pro 2013?
Confusion! GeekBench does not report the Mac Pro Xeon series chips correctly MacPro6.1.
The rub here is the ID string within the chip is the same as the i Series.
As to a cheaper CPU option only the lower end Xeon (3.7 GHz Quad Core Xeon E5-1620v2). Remember this is a Pro's class box not a consumer class box.
Ahh! Now that is interesting. Well, I need it for C++ programming in Xcode and I'm hoping for faster compile times and better responsiveness (of the Xcode UI). I'm currently torn between an iMac 2015 and a Mac Pro with upgraded CPU. Geekbench says that the iMac 2015 (with 4.0 GHz CPU) has a higher score, while being a lot cheaper.
Is there something I miss?
