Why does my screen appear discolored when the screen is turned off?

Even when off, there appears to be a large blemish within the screen. There doesn't seem to be any physical damage. What is this?

There is either water damage or the liquid crystal display (LCD) is damaged. You will most likely need to replace the screen. Please follow the screen replacement guide.
