How do I trigger the Home button without the front assembly?

I have an iPhone 3GS that was dropped, The entire front panel assembly (glass, LCD, home button) is broken.

I want to see if I can restart it, but for that to happen, I need to somehow close the Home button circuit to emulate the button.

I've tried connecting the two fields that would have hit the button prongs, but I'm not having any luck.

You guessed right. To emulate the home button being pressed you need to short the two exposed pads. I like using a pair of metal tweezers, but you can use a paper clip bent into a "U" shape.
