How do I install a solid state drive to my iMac G5 20" A1076...

I need to know how to install a solid state drive into this iMac. I know how to but the only problem is the guy that brought it in (buddy of mine) doesn't have the original drive for the iMac so how can I do this?

It's stuck in a boot-loop and when I opened the system it was very lets just say "unprofessionally" installed (the solid drive that is as it was just sitting there with no adapter hovering over the area).

Also what kind of solid drive should I use? The one he has in it is a, FILEMATE- SolidGo 2.5" SATA SSD with mini USB 2.0 and it's 64GB.

I already have a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter for a solid drive I just need to know how do the job without the original drive and if this 64GB he brought will suffice for the device (no punt intended).

Thanks! Hope to hear from someone soon!

You have some limits you'll need to work within:

  • This system only has a SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) interface so what ever drive you put in needs to work at this speed. Review the drives spec sheet before buying it to make sure it supports this speed.
  • The newest OS this system can support is 10.5.8 Leopard. Nothing newer!
  • The Max amount of RAM this system supports is only 2 GB. I strongly recommend you max it out.

I would not recommend using this system on the internet as Apple has no since stopped supporting the OS with any security patches or updates.

You also have limits with the apps and what they can support. You won't be able to use any of todays apps as they require newer OS's to work. You'll need to locate older apps at the flea markets (on CD's).

Here's the IFIXIT guide to replace the internal HD: iMac G5 20" Model A1076 Hard Drive Replacement. You'll want a SSD that offer SATA auto sense technology. As an example: Samsung SSD 750 EVO. You'll need an adapter frame like this one: OWC 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Adapter Bracket. You'll need to save the thermal sensor and re-attach it to the SSD body.

Without a working bootable drive you'll need to locate a retail copy of Leopard (CD) so you can boot up the system to then install the OS from it onto the SSD.

Thanks! I appreciate it!

Do you think it would be worth it to do? I feel like all the limitations kind of make the fix pointless...

Sorry Guy ;-{ Unless you're a collector of have some other good reason to hold on to it. Its time to retire your trusty old friend.
