Slow start-up, loud fan, programs not working.

My mac suddenly would not start-up as usual. It was extremely slow and the fan kicked in on high. Diagnostic check passed everything, so I don't think it is a memory issue. I have 80 GB left of hard drive space. Do you think I need a new battery? My hard drive icon is different also, as is the cd icon when I backed up files.

I know this is an old post but, I had the same problem on on my G5 desktop recently ,did all the obvious stuff ( clearing files etc. ) . I unplugged the computer before going away recently ( unplugged, not, turned off ) .Got back after a few days ,plugged it back in and , all functions back to normal , fast start up, fan working correctly ,! I spoke to a tech' about this and he said ,by removing the power completely for a while ,maybe, allowed the capacitors to drain completely

Makes sense and anyway whatever it was the old G5 is running like of old again :-)

Brian, how are your date and time holding or printer selection?

I would check your hard drive in Disk Utility. It might be failing. Just run disk utility, select your hard drive, then run the "Verify Disk" option, and see if that returns any errors.

If it reports an error, then run the "Repair Disk" option. If this doesn't fix it, there may be a problem with your hard drive, or your computer's cooling system. Open it up, and check for any fluid pooling up, or corrosion on the bottom of the case. (Assuming your PMG5 has a liquid cooling unit)
