3 beeps when turned on, RAM works fine in other laptop, ram slots ok

I know that 3 beeps means a ram issue, but the computer was working fine and just shut off by itself and when I tried to turn it on again its giving the 3 beeps. The ram works fine on a different laptop and its been working fine in this one for over a year. I doubt the slot itself went bad because its doing the same thing regardless which slot the memory is in. When there is no memory the computer beeps once indication missing ram. My question is , is there an IC controlling the ram that could have gone bad? Ive been fixing PCs and Macs for over 10 years and this one has me stumped.
