Robert Jay, Find link below to your Subaru engine parts manual, it appears recoil/housing and perhaps fly wheel may have to be removed to access the 2 mounting bolts for starter, pg. 40 of manual.Also find the service manual link #2. Good luck.

got it all back together, won't start with key, have to start with screwdriver on starter. what could be wrong?
@larry ashley,sr model of your engine? Could be a bad solenoid or starter relay as well as a bad ignition lock.
