Can I put Seagate FireCuda Gaming SSHD in my iMac

Hey Everyone,

My current hard drive is dying and I want to replace it with:

Seagate FireCuda Gaming SSHD 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive ST1000DX002

Couple things:

1) will this perform well with my computer?

2) I am graphic designer so I need a reliable hard drive

Computer specs:

iMac 27-inch mid 2011 3.4ghz i7

I know i'll need to order OWC In-Line Thermal Sensor.

Thank your suggestions and input!

@danj can you point me in the right direction?

Yes, the Seagate FireCuda SSHD drive will work and will be an ideal replacement for your old drive.

Here's the IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Hard Drive Replacement. And yes you also need this: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2011 Hard Drive Upgrade otherwise your systems fans will go into over drive as the HD's internal thermal sensor won't be accessible to the systems SMC services.

I should point out your system has a spare SATA port! If you can swing it I would also add in a second drive here to really make your system sing!

What you want to is to add in a SSD to be your boot drive and host your app's. In addition it will be your cache drive. I would go with a least a 250 GB or 512 GB SSD drive. Here is the guide you'll need to follow: Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Hard Drive Kit

Awesome thank you for your input!

Was just playing around with numbers.

What if I Got this Seagate BarraCuda ST1000DM010 1TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive instead of the SSHD? and add this SanDisk SSD PLUS 2.5" 240GB SATA III

Would this combo be better than just having the SSHD?

That works too! Using either a dual drive SSD/HD or SSD/SSHD offers good performance.

The only difference between the HD Vs SSHD here is the caching of the work piece (held on the drive). The SSHD would offer a bit faster load time if you are constantly opening or altering a file that is smaller than the cache.

sounds good! Do I need a special cable to hook up for second sdd drive? or will the cable in the box be fine?

You'll need a few things which are part of this kit: iMac Intel 27" Mid 2011 Dual Hard Drive Kit. If you have the needed tools you can chose the parts only set.

Yes you can altough the performance of the sata port might not really benefit of the sshd. here's a guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ivqKp79...also if you just remove the temperature sensor and put it on the new drive, you don't need to buy a new one.

The systems SATA port is SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) which is more than fast enough for a traditional HD or SSHD. Even most SATA III SSD's still won't hit its saturation point during the write operation.

Thanks i forgot it was not a 2007 model like mine:)

Hello,

I would greatly appreciate if someone could answer my following question: I have a late 2012 iMac 27" and would like to replace the mechanical HD with an SSHD. Can someone tell me if I need a special cable or can I simply use SSD Fan Control or a similar app to reduce speed of fans?

Also I have an older iMac 21" late 2009 and have got an SSD in there and running SSD Fan Control, and that is working fine. What if I were to put an SSHD in there? Can I use the same software or do I then need a special cable?
