Macbook Pro 13" mid 2012 A1278 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 8GB RAM
I am thinking to upgrade my old macbook pro with 16GB RAM. Would you please specify if I do so the machine will be working fine or no?

You need two 8GB DDR3L RAM = 16GB
Based on my experiences, either go for crucial or kingston which is specially designed for apple macbook.
there are cases using 3rd party which causes issues.
it would be good, if the shop is okay to do a in place upgrade and test on spot.

Yes, the macbook(I have one of these and have bought 16gb RAM for it) is capable of taking 16Gb or RAM modules, but ensure that you have the right frequency or it will fail. Also, you are better off just repairing it your self. The memory is fully exposed once you pop the back off. You literally only need one screwdriver to remove the back plate, the memory comes out after pushing on the tabs with your finger. There are plenty of youtube videos which will go through this.
