RMPs staying up as I increase speed

== RPMs and gears on 2004 Jetta automatic transmission==

My car normally runs around 2500rpms at 80kms/h however today the rpms kept climbing to almost 3700rpm's. This continued to occur even after stopping and putting it into park and then re-engaging the transmission. It worked normally for the 1st and 2nd but seems to get stuck in 3rd.

We've just spent $1500 on other repairs and I really hope this is an electrical issue like a sensor.
