Can you audit this plan. I have G4 2003 model, drive is now 7 years and getting on.
I plan buy an ATA100 120G with enclosure with firewire 800. Connect to Powerbook G4. Create a partition on it (mac type not good). Use SuperDuper to clone the drive. Remove the old drive and replace with the bought one.

I wouldn't clone the same drive that you're booted up to. It may or may not even let you, but if it does, you run the risk of getting a corrupted image, because you're making an image of a "live" OS, and there's a good chance you'll run into "open file" issues, i.e. it can't copy a file that is open, and may either crash when it tries or create an incomplete/corrupted image. I mean, you can try, but you do run that risk. Personally I wouldn't want to start fresh on a new hard drive with an OS that was put in place that way.
Do you have the OS reinstall media? The better way is to simply boot from the media and install the OS onto the new drive (whether it's internal or external at that point doesn't matter), and then when it asks whether or not you're upgrading from another Mac, you can point it to the files on the old drive (assuming the OS you're using is new enough to have that feature).

In the for whats it worth department I have done what Pearly wants to do using CCC. Works perfectly--don't know about Super Duper though. Yours is the best procedure but I didn't want to redo all those settings after getting the computer where I wanted it. +
Good to hear that it can work...I've had some successes, and some failures. Personally I'd rather do it the other way than run the risk of potentially have a corrupt OS down the line because a few files are missing, but it could be a viable temporary solution for him, at least.
I had a look at CCC. Is it mac compatible? The reason I want to clone in place is that the drive has ITunes on it, with close to 6k songs on a 2003 drive, which I think must be decaying. As regarding installing installing new os, and pointing to the old drive, what's involved in that. I'm doing this for a friend so bare with me.

CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) was built for Mac.
Migration Assistant is the application that can be used to copy stuff from the old drive. This can be invoked at the appropriate place in the install as noted above or after the install completes. Migration Assistant can be set to copy all settings, users and user data from the old system or a subset if run later.
