stuck in headphone mode

I have just replaced an iPhone 3g with headphone Jack Assembly Product code: IF137-004. I thought i did everything correctly but after putting the iPhone back together its stuck in headphone mode. If i use headphones its ok. I have tried plugging and unplugging a set of headphones (didnt work, and being new I doubted it would). The only thing I could think of was that the part that goes around the headphone jack needed to be covered because the stock one was (replacement part didnt come with any tape or anything). If you look at this link iPhone 3G/3GS Headphone Jack Assembly the part I am talking about is near the headphone plug the 2 red squares in red and they have 3 parts out the back of each of them (i dont know what the parts sticking out of the ribbon would be called). Thanks for anyone that can answer or help.

Just a quick question while I am trying to find an answer for your issue. The old part had the "2 red squares in red and they have 3 parts out the back" covered and the new one does not? Did you try to apply some may be electric tape to cover it for now to see if it resolves your problem? The other question I have is, why did you have to change the other jack? Thanks

the flex cable was broken so i tried replacing it for the first time....didnt work. but i learned two things! how to install it incorrectly and correctly. What i think i did was misfolded the cable and i pinched it shut breaking the wires. i just didnt know it at the time. oh well 9$ mistake.

so derrikesiphone, are you back in business with your phone? Issues resolved :-)?
