Why is my refrigerator not cooling enough?

My LG model 795.7103 is 6 years old, and was working perfectly until 4 days ago.

The temp is set for 40 degrees-frig/zero degrees freezer, but now cools to 50 frig/35 freezer. It's as if it's stuck on defrost.

A name-brand repairman didn't find an immediate cause, even after removing freezer drawers and back-of-frig panels, and used his hand-held tester, and was on the phone with someone else much of the time.

The coils are free of ice. The compressor is running, and the air coming out is cold, but not icy cold.

The refrigerator has never been moved, so I'm doubting a seal broke.

He said he was unsure of the problem, and would have to open the closed system to look for leaks.

Parts and labor could cost up to $1500 and 3 trips to my house.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

CAROLYN QUTAMI - Sadly, the repairman is right about the problem located in the sealed system. The price is different between companies. My area starts around $800 -$1200. Some of the sealed system parts might be covered under manufacturer's warranty. Contact LG customer support 1-800-243-0000 be sure you have the model & serial number off the tag inside the fresh food section. If you decide to repair it I would recommend LG handle the repairs or a qualified technician with LG experience.

I found a repairman who's very familiar with the LG refrigerators. Apparently they have a lot of compressors go bad.

He checked our unit and immediately diagnosed a faulty compressor.

I ordered a new unit online from Sears Parts Direct and he returned to install it the next week.

My total cost was around $600, not as bad as feared.

I still love that refrigerator and don't want to replace it; current similar models of any brand won't fit in the space.

Here's hoping it lasts another six years!

Carolyn Qutami - LG's manufactures warranty on the sealed system - (compressor, evaporator, condenser, filter drier) covers parts and labor for 1 year then they cover the parts only for 7 yrs. The linear compressor is covered for 10 years. After the first year all you pay is the labor.
