I know the newer iMacs can be used as external monitors, but I was wondering if there is a way to rig up my iMac 9,1 (2.93Ghz) to be used as an external monitor. It'd be perfect down the road with a newer MBP driving it...

Searching through Mactracker it would appear only the 27" iMacs have video input. The stats on your model say no video input. What this means is you will have to some engineering and serious modding to do what you want--it would be easier and probably less expensive to trade your computer on a 27" model designed for what you want to do.
