Need to repurpose a donated G5

We have been donated a G5 Mac to repurpose in our church for running Mediashout but need to upgrade/modernise the OS and memory... Is there a cost effective way to do this... we have a very limited budget. We have tried visiting various Mac forums but to be honest the responses are very condescending and patronising about older gear!

Update (04/02/2018)

Hello All,

Sorry for the prolonged silence since your very kind responses... pressure of work and domestic commitments have had to take priority.

We have reviewed all our options regarding the G5 and have decided for the time being to mothball the project until such a time as funds are available for a full-on upgrade to a modern machine... either a PC or MAC... that will fit the purpose and be more future-proof.

Thanks again for all your advice and assistance... we are very grateful.

Tell me the details of what you have. The hard drive sizes, the amount of RAM, the current operating system, the version and system requirement of the Mediashout software (a link would be helpful). Then we can count the cost of building your tower, "For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?" and possible upgrade paths. We may be able to find some kind soul around here that would be willing help out a church

Hello Rich...

~ Power Mac G5 (2004 build as far as we can tell)

~ OS: Mac OS 10.3.9 - ‘Panther’ (2003)

~ CPU is 2.2

~ Speed is 2 GHz

~ Bus Speed 1 GHZ

~ Current memory: 512 MB (2x256 Mb) There are 8 slots so, logically, there is plenty of room for expansion (We think up to 4 GB provided that everything would work with 500 MB memory in the slots)

~ Graphics card is GeForce FX 5200

~ We don’t know what the hard drive is at present but may be able to find out once a new battery arrives.

~ MediaShout system requirements link: http://www.dmmusic.com/mediashout-6-for-...

We think the main problem is that the hardware won’t update beyond OS X 10.5 (Leopard), assuming a copy of 10.4 and 10.5 can be found here in the UK to do the updates.

The following links help explain the problem and relate to the current OS

Thanks again for taking an interest.

@wardens2 this machine did not come in a 2.2 GHz version. We really need to be on the same page. See if you can get the serial number. Input it here and let me know which machine you have"

Thanks Rich... will double0-check and get back to you asap...

Hello Rich, Greetings from a very cold Plymouth, England!!!

We checked the serial number on the site you suggested and a PDF of the spec can be found here

The link worked fine when I tried it but in case not, the serial number is

YM447728QPM

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Dave

For ease of reference, your computer specs are here: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/power...

"Modernizing" your system is relative, given that you're working with a 13+ year old machine. Your machine won't run anything past OS X 10.5 ("Leopard"). According to MediaShout the minimum requirements for MediaShout v6 is OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks") so there is no way you will be able to run MediaShout on the computer you have now. At least as far back as MediaShout v4, you would still need an Intel-based computer to run the software. Prior to v4 I don't know that there even exists a version of MediaShout for Macintosh systems.

Is there a reason why this has to be on Apple hardware? Is it just a matter of someone gave you this Mac and you're trying to use it for this to save money? There's still a reasonable market for the Power Mac G5 on ebay; they seem to be selling for $100-$150 on average. You could try selling the computer on ebay, then use the proceeds to buy a cheap second-hand Windows PC with Windows 7 on it. You should just about break even with that.

Thanks for that... pretty much confirms our initial suspicions... but hey... nothing ventured, etc...

Yes, the reason for this route was that the machine was donated in case it would be useful... we have a very limited budget (i.e. virtually non-existent) so it seemed worth investigating.

I guess it's time for us to put this project to bed, thank you all for your time and interest and to look at other avenues to bring our Worship presentation software up to date.

We are much obliged to you.

Regards,

Dave
