Why do the L2 and L3 buttons on my controller randomly malfunction?

When I play my PS3 with one of my controllers, the L2 and L3 buttons sometimes malfunction. While playing Call of Duty the L3 button just randomly stops working and at the same time the L2 button performs half the action it's supposed to and then stops.

Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
