iMac won't turn on

Hello.

I inherited an iMac (27-in mid-2011) this year. The previous owner had removed all their files and reinstalled all the latest iOS etc.

We were able to get it started after I picked it up over a month ago. I had left it on and plugged in for a couple of weeks and then last weekend I realized it had gone 100% dark. It has been like that ever since. Have tried different outlets. Tried plugging and unplugging back of machine. Tried removing accessories (just keyboard). I replaced the old power cord with brand new one, but still no life.

I'm a newbie in DIY repairs but I guess I'd like opinions on whether to return to Apple Store for scrap, or if it is worth troubleshooting via some IFIXIT solution (and if so what would you try first?). Thanks for any input!

If you can carefully remove the display iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Display Replacement you should be able to see the onboard diagnostic LED's Which are just below and to the right of the HD on the main logic board

Do any of the LED's light up? If not and your sure the power cord is good and plugged into a good outlet then the power supply needs replacing. Here's the guide you'll ned to follow to take it out: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Power Supply Replacement and here's the needed part: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309, 2374, 2390 or 2429 Power Supply.

The tricky part is not damaging the display cables when you take the display off.

Nice! - Thanks, Dan & Eigirdas! I will take a look at that guide + replacement! If I do replace the power, and it powers on again - Assuming hypothetically it is then in decent running order, how many years do you think potentially it may have left in it? Is that something anyone can estimate? One or two years at least? Or are there other components that typically die?

Mine is still kicking ;-} And I'm hoping to get at least 3 more years if not more! I've upgrade it with 16 GB or RAM & a second drive (500 GB SSD) it really sings!

That's awesome!! I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

Hi again! I am VERY happy to report back that I replaced the power supply this Saturday, with all of your suggestions above, and the iMac turned on perfectly. Thank you again, so much!

Hi! Yes, that is correct - there is no sound. No indication of life. I have been on the phone twice with Apple Support, to attempt to turn it on. They no longer support this machine so will not be able to even try to repair. They were going to set up an appt for me to drop it off but I thought I would see if there was any ifixit option before I do that.

Follow Dan then, because hes comment was identical to mine:D
