Why can’t I turn the power off?

I’ve had my DSi for a few years now. I don’t remember any big drops or water damage. It charges fine and I can play games normally. But although I can turn it on I can’t turn it off unless I close the screen and remove the game card whilst in the game. If I accidentally take the game out or it freezes I have to wait hours until it runs out of battery!
