blue folder with the finder logo alternated by a question mark

It is a long time ago, but I have a similar problem. My iMac shows a blue folder with the finder logo alternated by a question mark. I've tried to put in disks to boot from, but no matter what I do, it keeps spitting them out and coming back to the blue folder. What should I do? Thank you.

Your hard drive cannot find an appropriate OS. Let's start here: go to this kink and identify exactly which machine you have:

https://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup...

UPDATE

I believe this is your machine:

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/...

Pre-Installed MacOS: 8.6 Maximum MacOS: X 10.4.11

Do you have original installation disks?

Do you have retail system version disks?

Are your disks machine specific grey disks?

UPDATE 5/29/18

If you do not have the system software. you can find it on eBay by searching for

Apple Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger - Full Version for Mac

Here's one https://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Mac-OS-X-...

Hope this helps, thank you!

Could you be more specific, that link takes me to all the iMacs ever made ;-)

Oops, wrong link! This is what it says: Apple iMac G3/400 DV SE (Slot Loading)

Identifiers: Slot Loading DV SE - M7668LL/A - PowerMac2,1 - M5521 - 1821

Part no: M7668N/A

Thank you for your help!

I unfortunately don't have disks. Is there a way that I can download software myself? Or a way I can obtain the disks?

Thank you for your help!
