Replacing the monitor on the 2016 Touch Bar MacBook Pro

Why do you need to replace the display? Did you drop it or break it?

Apple has been replacing some due to a ribbon cable failure where the display will turn on when lifted but will go out when you get about 90 degrees or more.

In some ways replacing the display is a bit easier than the older models.

I was going to take it to apple but this 2016 MacBook Pro showed what looked like stage lights at the bottom of the screen and before we could bring it to apple, the screen is now completely blank. It works fine with an external monitor though...

Are you suggesting apple might fix this for free even though it is out of warranty?

If you look through IFIXIT Questions you'll find quite a few people have encountered this. There appears to be a design issue with the displays ribbon cables. I would first see if you can get it covered under an extended warranty coverage (this is were the product is repaired beyond the typical warranty) As you likely know Apple has an extended warrant program now for the keyboard issues many people have encountered on the 2016 and some 2017 models.

Free is cheaper ;-}

Don't get swayed by the Genius tech if they balk, tell them you've seen quite a few (point to IFIXIT if you want) that have this issue and many have had them replaced under warranty. Speak to the service manager if needed, be courteous but firm.

My local apple genius said apple could fix it for $450 and would fix any keyboard issues for free. Can you point me to where I can ' tell them you've seen quite a few .... that have this issue and ... have had them replaced under warranty. ' ??

I've seen that others have had this problem but not that apple has fixed them under a repair extension program.

Here's a few: Screen comes on when lid is opened but goes off at 90 degrees

Backlight turning off when Lid is open more than halfway

Any I'm sure just this year's IFIXIT Questions I can find at least 15 more and 20 more in last years Q's thats too many for such a new system. Don't forget this is only one site which people post their Q's on I'm sure it's the tip of the Iceberg!

Maybe you'll need to start a class action suit to get Apple to do what they were forced to do with the keyboard issues.

I know people have bent Apples arm to get it done for free but your luck has to do with whom you speak with. As they say a squeaky wheel gets the grease ;-}
