No picture or backlight

Hi

I got a Macbook Air, which had both hinges broken, I powered on the laptop, and the screen worked fine, although only laying flat on the couch.

I moved the screen a little, and the screen went white. After that I have not been able to get a picture from the screen.

No backlight, and no picture.

I have changed the hinge/LCD-cable and still no reaction from the screen. The laptop itself chimes when starting up etc.

What could be the problem?

I’m very, very new to the whole “micro-soldering” etc. But I want to learn it, and I’m not stupid (Not that stupid anyway). I have googled plenty, yet I’m not that great at analyzing, tracing. Basically I don’t know what I should look for.

I’ve got access to both the schematics and the boardview, for easier diagnostics, but I can only locate the issue to a limited extend.

  • I got 0 volts on pin 3/4 on the LCD connector.
  • Voltage is fine on both sides of the (F7700) fuse.

Although I only get a voltage-reading on 3,4 and 5 on Q7706 - Pretty much the rest in that entire area gives me 0 readings.

Can someone help out a newbie?

Thank you!

The broken hinges have cut and shorted the data & backlight cables. You’ll need to first disconnect the display assembly to do any trouble shooting as you’ve still got a short in the wiring. From the looks of it you’ve got a few components burnt are you upto micro-soldering? If not I think the best thing here is to bring it into an independent Mac repair shop as this is going to take some work which Apple or their authorized service centers won’t do.

Hi

Thanks for the answer.. I should point out that I have changed the hinge/cable - so the cable should be good.

I’m all up for micro-soldering. Don’t have quite the “right tools” for it, but I have improvised and practiced a bit on other “subjects” :-)

I take it more as a learning experience than a loss.

You'll need to find the schematics for your system and board view and take the time to watch Louis Rossmann's YouTube vids Be warned he's a bit foulmouthed! But he's top notch on his diagnostic skills.

I already have the schematics and boardviews (as stated in #0) - And I have watched Louis's vids (which are great btw) - Long time subscriber actually.. But yes, he might be abit foulmouthed at times, but I don't mind, and he is really good. Although his videos are great, I still have a (very) hard time locating my exact problem. I can find videos and people with similar issues, but that doesn't really narrow it down for me. - I am a novice at "finding what leads to what, and if one part works then it must be this one, which comes after because...." - Basically I don't really know exactly what I'm looking at.. That might be one of my weak spots.

Sadly, I can't really help you here with your problem as one needs direct access to the system to work it out.

Oh.. I see.. Hmm.. How much would it cost to send it to a repair-specialist? - I recorded a video before I read your comment. Hopefully it could narrow it down further perhaps. https://youtu.be/PSfaSWOmEDk
