Trackpad popped out at the bottom

I accidentally dropped something and my trackpad popped out at the bottom. Hard clicks are now not registered. I tried to pop it back in but it won’t stick. What do I do? My nearest Microsoft store is really far away.

happened to my surface laptop 1, i did a fix that was super ghetto as it was out of warranty. Essentially, you peel off the metal shroud on the underside of the touchpad so it drops back in. Clicks will register again without this shroud, and the touchpad will sit flush again. Hope this helps someone as i found no help online

Thank you so much! This worked for me

I'm afraid to tear that piece off. Should I actually do that? You said it will sit flush again and the clicks will work, but will it still wiggle around and pop out?

Thank you! Removed the metal thing and it works again.

Hi, Paige, the trackpad sits flush and doesn't wiggle at all.

However if you're doing something really weird like holding your laptop upside down while it's open, the trackpad does lean out a bit from the frame, since there's nothing holding it in from the bottom anymore. I found this to be much better than the alternative of not having your trackpad click anymore or risk shattering your trackpad trying to bend a metal clip under the keyboard.

Thank you so much! After a stressful hour of trying to get help from Microsoft, I used your method of removing the metal shroud....and it works! Can't thank you enough!

Here’s how to get the keyboard and trackpad off to reseat it: Microsoft Surface Laptop Teardown

Take a close look at the battery and examine it for swelling, which could be a contributing factor in it popping out.

you need a thin tool, even a ruler works. the metal piece that is sticking out needs to be put back. to do this you need to push the metal part in with the ruler. push it in lightly, but make sure it goes in the farthest it can go this should fix the problem. the touch pad will be a little bit lifted but the hard click will work

thankyou so much! will try this and let you know

Hi, I want to know if it worked for you?

Yes, this works. lift the touch pad up about 1cm and push the metal clip right down to the base of the hole, then released the touchpad and let the metal clip pull it all down. it does still stick out a bit, but the hard click now works.

can someone give me a more detailed explanation on how to do this? im having trouble understanding what to do.

Probably too late now but I just had a similar problem and ended up using a very thin putty nice and pressing the back piece of the retainer down and its now better than it was before it broke.

I took out the metal retainer and now it works perfect. It is flush as well. Pushing down the retainer did not work for me.

i had no choice but to take it out as well, sit flush now but pops out if you turn laptop upside down. mine is a surface laptop 2 model 1769

This should have a detachable keyboard correct?

If so look up a new keyboard for the surface. Make sure it is exactly the same.

If not then try prying a little bit more to see under the trackpad. Be careful not to break it anymore.

Is anything stuck under it?

The same happened to me. My trackpad popped up. I tested it and right-click and click to drag did not work. I lifted on the trackpad a little more and took the metal piece out (which was super easy) and it works fine now. I even tried to flip my laptop upside down to see if it will fall out and it doesn't. It lies flush now. Thanks Abdullah Shaikh for suggesting.

Can you tell me how exactly you took the metal piece out? Did you just rip it off while slightly lifting the trackpad?

Glad i could help!

It seems to me that the trackpad is glued to the little metal trackpad frame. When the epoxy comes away from the bottom of the trackpad, the screw nub sticking up at the center-bottom of the trackpad bay no longer makes contact with the clicker button located on the under-side of the trackpad.

The issue lies with the rather-thin metal piece coming away from the bottom of the trackpad … the separation creates a buffer of space and the clicking device no longer makes connection with that little metal nub.

Putting a very fine coating of adhesive and using paper clips to adhere it to the trackpad was my initial idea, but then I realized you’d have to bend the tab on the bottom of the metal trey to insert it back into the tab beneath the soft ‘alencantara’ keyboard coating. Or whatever the heck it’s called. I’d look it up, but … you know what I’m trying to say.

Moving on … I decided to put a super thin coating with a paintbrush so that the adhering agent touches the bottom of the trackpad and holds the metal trey into place. Then, put it back into its bay, and give it a day to cure, with a very slight weight (I used a paperweight to keep the trackpad depressed) over night.

The next day, it was fantastic. No problems since.

I had a similar fix for this, same to the most voted answer of removing the shroud although I left it in for mine. I just used a few small strips of 2 sided tape, bend the shroud back under and push down on the tape. This works well for me. I also repair cell phones for a living with this tape.
