NIC fried by lightning

Hi, I have an Acer E5-576-392H . It works great, very happy with it. However I wish to know if it is possible to replace the NIC (ethernet card), as it has been fried by lightning. I does not appear in the network interfaces, neither in Windows 10 nor in any Linux live cd.

Thanks in advance!

It’s very likely you can get a replacement WiFi card, but Ethernet is integrated into the motherboard and is not independantly replaceable. Before you invest in any hardware changes, could I suggest running a full anti-virus sweep using the likes of Malwarebytes and AWDCleaner? Just to rule out the possibility of a coincidental virus attack on a stormy day.

Hi Graham,

Thank you for taking the time to answer me, I appreciate. I agree it was a long shot to ask for an idea to replace ethernet. I am using wifi anyway. Virus is discarted as I booted in Linux and have the same issue, so it’s not a Windows thing.

I’ll forget about ethernet on this laptop and happily use wifi.

All the best!

While I can say for certain with your system the previous model had the Ethernet logic as part of the main logic board. Most modern laptops are doing the same as the amount of space a module uses requires more space and the amount of components is so few now it also doesn’t make sense as well.

So depending on where and when you bought your system you might be able to get it repaired under warranty (EU has two years). Otherwise you’ll need to either find someone skilled enough to fix your logic board or you’ll need to replace it. The price of this system here in the states is quite low ~$550 as this is only a i3 system. So do make an effort to see if this is economical to repair.

Now the good news!

As your system does have USB ports you could use an external USB adapter instead! The only issue will be the driver support review the OS supported. Here’s one option USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet NIC Network Adapter
