I literally just did this damage to mine too. I’m very upset. I addedd 64GB of RAM, but I broke that connector.

Did you have success finding someone who can micro-solder?

Me too ... I am looking for help in London

This happened to me too, but it didn't pop off the board in quite the same way. The connector broke in the middle, leaving half of it in the wifi cable and half of it still on the board. STAY AWAY FROM THIS UPGRADE. This will cost a fortune to fix.

I have had a quotation from an authorised Apple agent to repair it of £214 (approx USD280).

I also asked at an Apple store. They said they wouldn’t repair it, but would replace the PCB, minimum price over £400 (USD 520).

I am living with a sub-optimal situation for the present. I use Bluetooth keyboards and track pad. Sometimes they stay connected; often the connection drops. I also use remote control VNC software that enables me to control the Mac Mini from my iPhone or iPads. It’s slower than using keyboard or track pad directly but it always stays connected.

You are very lucky! You should be able to carefully pop off the board connector from the cable then using a fine soldering iron re-attach it.

You’ll only get one chance here so you need to be sure you can do this. If not, you should find someone with the tools & skills to do it for you.

Do you mean re-attach 3 points of silver iron onto the board?

Yes, This is not easy!

It sounds like you are not sure of your self and really need to get your system to someone with very good micro soldering skills. If you mess up you could make things worse!

I actually think only one of the three soldering pads carries the wifi signal (in addition to the center pin), the two on the sides are purely there to hold the ring in place (and they obviously failed miserably!) So focus on the one smaller pad and use the others as best you can. You do want to keep the ring isolated from the center pin soldering pad which is why there's a plastic plate under the connector ring.

@ikseoj - Its a coax connection the center wire is the feed but the outer shield also needs to be connected hence the other connections. Two for the middle (smaller) and two for the shield (larger)

@danj - There was one big tab coming off of the ring that I'm fairly certain was connected to the pad opposite the center pin pad, but it sounds like you're saying both of those pads are for the center pin? I put an annotated picture in another answer to this post. Would you agree with that? The connect point of WIFI antenna was broken during tear down

Has anyone obtained an estimate for the cost of this repair?

Or actually had the repair carried out? If so, what was the actual cost?

I've fixed two and had one other that the pads where torn fully off so I couldn't fix it.

The repair took about an hour and a half to desolder the connector back on. I charged $120 USD.

I just did this on mine. Hoping to get a repair estimate tomorrow, but WIFI does seem to work without the antenna plate. Perhaps just with diminished range?

Maybe you'd want to research some wifi adapters like I did the other day. Might cost only a tenth of what you may be willing to pay. You don't have to go with this one in the link.

I upgraded the Ram to mine and have the same problem. I asked my friend to hold the top part of the computer while the wires were still connected and what clearly upset me was she dropped it with zero care to answer her phone.

It wouldn’t make sense undergoing a costly repair if this is an older computer unit like my unsupported mac mini. I’d only seriously use professional help if this is one of the newest up to date models.

My recommended resolution is to just buy a USB wifi adapter for less than $20.

OR if your wifi router is close enough - use the ethernet port to connect internet directly.

I just did this yesterday, what a pain. I’m hearing enough stories online about this and after looking at the connector more closely, in my opinion this is either a design shortcoming or manufacturing defect on certain units. The connector is simply not secured to the motherboard well enough to ensure that the wire disconnects before the connector breaks off.

I believe I did fix it by resoldering the connector ring back to the motherboard using a standard soldering iron (along with two pairs of reading glasses and a magnifying glass.) Seems to be working fine now, although I hope I don’t have to ever disconnect the wire again because I think the ring would pull off again.

Note that while there are four soldering points on the motherboard I believe that only two are necessary for the actual wifi signal transmission (see picture). The other two are meant to hold the connector ring in place but it looks like there are barbs on the ring which barely penetrate through the plastic separation plate which ensures the ring doesn’t contact the center pin’s soldering point. Those two barbs didn’t get enough contact with the soldering pads and easily separated when trying to disconnect the wire. At that point it was inevitable that the third more robust soldering point carrying the signal would tear too.

So when I fixed it I made sure the plastic plate was back in place and the ring was connected to the one necessary soldering pad. I also soldered to one of the other pads but trying to get the third seemed like pushing it so I left it unconnected. Put it all back together and so far all of my wireless connections are working great.

I agree this isn’t for the faint of heart, a slip of the iron or something else and the motherboard could be toast. On the other hand, this isn’t rocket science, the connection only has to be as good as plugging any two-wire antenna lead in (coax on your tv for example). I did have the motherboard out of the case while doing this.

@iksoj - OK I see the confusion!

You still have half of the connector still attached! Yes you are correct there are three points for the shield part and one point for the center wire.

Most of the time the full connector is ripped off. I just replace them and sometimes you need to patch the logic board to get it working properly.

I just did this today. However, I went ahead and screwed the bracket back onto the motherboard and left the other connection loose. Both my wifi and bluetooth are working normally - which seems impossible to me. Wifi throughput is normal per a run on Speedtest. What is the purpose of that small connector?
