Why is my ds lite not turning on?

I tried turning my ds lite on after a few years of not using it, so I pushed the power switch and the screen and lite turned on for a second and everything went black. I opened up the battery compartment and saw that it was corroded so i cleaned it out and replaced the battery but i still have the same problem. any idea to what happened or any suggestions i could do to fix it??
