Suitable tape for Alienware 17r4 Heatsink/Fan?

Hi,

My fan decided it wanted to have a bad bearing, so i had to replace it. Unfortunately, this meant taking the super old black tape off to do so. In order to keep airflow controlled i know i have to use tape and attach it to the heatsink, but what tape would be suitable? I looked around and heard about Kapton tape, but unfortunately, i can’t immediately find that. Is there an alternative?

Hi Christopher Neal,

Normally why Kapton tape is recommended, is due to heat resistant and protection against electrostatic sensitive, and of course, holding in place.

I agree Kapton tape can be hard to find, some places you can look for is online or electronics stall.

For temporary measure, I use electric tape to hold in place, but maybe some folks have a better suggestion.

When I took apart my Alienware 17R4 laptop to switch out the fans, I noticed cloth-like tape over the fan and heatsink fins. I know it has to take a lot of heat, so I did some research and found the closes technology to it is call Tesa Triple A 51036 PET Tape. Here’s a link to the product information page: https://www.tesa.com/en-us/industry/tesa...

It comes in various sizes, but 19mm (3/4 in) is the closes width to the original tape.

This is a Germany based company, so look for genuine branded Tesa made in Germany. Some are made in China or Mexico which some Customers says aren’t genuine, but it’s possible that Tesa may be allowing those countries to manufacture for them.

UPDATE: I installed two new fans using the Tesa tape I ordered to cover up the gap between the fins and edge of fan. Here’s some pictures:

@alexhern

Is it safe to use it instead of worn out tapes that hold the cables to the motherboard in alienware laptops?

@simzware looks like @alexhern hasn't been here for a good while. I can answer that so; Yes it is safe and okay to do that.

Thanks for your reply. I did a lot of research and I could not put my hands on a definitive result. The Acetate Cloth Adhesive Tape is also suggested because it has no electrical conductivity due to their rubber based material. I do not know which one of both should I use as I did not find any information about the electrical conductivity of Tesa Triple A 51036 PET Tape.

But according to your answer I would go for the Tesa Triple A 51036 PET Tape. Thanks again :)
