White Screen of Death- Best way to avoid a second time?

Hello,

I did a overhaul of an iPhone 3GS. I changed the back housing, replaced the battery, and installed a new headphone jack assembly to fix a unresponsive power button.

Disassembly and reassembly were all successful except I got the white screen of death when completing everything. Looking around yielded that the LCD was broken from me not turning off the phone when diassembling.

The thing is, the power button was unresponsive before I attempted repairs, so naturally turning off the phone was impossible. I let it run until the battery died.

After reassembling- the power button now works and when pressed brings up a white screen. The home button is unresponsive- but the phone was in pre-activated mode (emergency calls only) so I have trouble trying to interact with it.

iTunes recognizes the phone (prompts- insert SIM)

I have bought a new display assembly (home button + lcd + digitizer) for sake of convenience- I assume I might have broken the whole assembly when I took the phone apart with a suction cup.

My Question ishow can I avoid breaking the second LCD? Now the battery works fine and I fear replacing the new display assembly would break it.

Thoughts / advice is greatly appreciated!

I am confused where you are in this repair process? Is your question how to turn OFF an Iphone without power button function, or other questions?

@brad: the repair is complete- i successfully repaired the power button and replaced the housing / battery.

when i finished the repair, the lcd gave a blank white screen. i have ordered a new display assembly (which arrived today). i plan to replace the entire assembly (lcd + digitizer + home buttom) for convenience.

however, i worry that i will break the second LCD when i attach connectors #1, #2, and #3.

To turn OFF iPhone, hold at same time both Home and Power buttons for about 5-10 seconds, the screen will turn OFF, immediately let go of buttons. Done. You can check with Home Button press, or check to see if Mute/Vibrate Switch vibrates iPhone to confirm OFF. Another way to get confirmation of OFF, is before you begin, have iPhone connected to computer with USB cable, then using iTunes and/or the USB tones or Computer information, perform the holding of Home and Power buttons for about 5-10 seconds until iPhone shuts OFF and release buttons.

@brad: thank you for the reply- i have a suspicion that the home button is broken (along with the entire display assembly), so doing the button combos don't yield results. As I said earlier, the phone is in "pre-activation" mode: as in it is not accessible and needs to be activated through iTunes, the mute button does not doing anything (when it should vibrate) and attempting to emulate "Slide to power off" doesn't work as well. Holding power+home does seem to keep the backlight on for a longer time than if it auto-locked, but after dimming, the phone will immediately display a white screen when I press the power button.
