BLACK SCREEN - charging lights sometimes work whats wrong? A8

I was given a Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) . The screen is black, but the charging lights sometimes work. I was told there may be water damage, but I keep seeing people talking about a “black screen of death” on Google. I just wanna know if anyone else has had this problem, or know how to fix it?. I also have tried pressing the volume down key and power key for 10 seconds with nothing. Any advice??
