Here's someone else facing the same problem Horizon blur black line on top of MacBook Pro 2017

do you know about the reason behind this kind of damages?

The cause is over-heating. Blocking the vents by using the system on a bed or other cloth surface which the system sinks into. Heavy online gaming which is very heavy with graphics. And lastly, heavy image or video editing.

I've had to replace over ten displays across the entire line. We have over 20 posts here alone of people encountering this issue.

How can it be over heading when an external montor works on it with no lines

The T-CON board is part of the internal display it has no involvement with the external display ability to display.

If I break (crack) the internal display screen that won't impact the external display will it. You are trying to rationalize displays A issues as impacting display B you just can't here.

Sadly this is a known issue in the newer MacBook Pro’s! The TCON board overheats so the components loose their values so the scan gets messed up.

You need a new display assembly to fix this MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly and heres the guide MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017 디스플레이 어셈블리 교체

but isn't same problem happen with the newly replaced display?no problem with new display's Tcon board ?

I'm not sure I follow you here. Are you asking if this will happen again? Sadly it can. People who are running their systems hot will encounter this again. I would strongly recommend you install a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro and makes sure you don't block the vents so the system can properly cool its self.

Hi, Dan. Thank you for looking into this. When one replaces the display assembly, what exactly is achieved? If the lines appear with time, is the TCON board still permanently damaged? Wouldn't a new one have the same issue in the same temperature conditions? Thanks!

@Gustavo Henrique - The T-CON board is part of the display assembly. So replacing the display assembly give you a new T-CON, hence you remove the damage just like replacing your cars tire. But just like it you can wear it out again.

So with a new display and T-CON board what do I need to do to prevent this from happening again? Clearly the issue is keeping your system from over heating it again. Make sure the vents are not blocked on the side and in the rear, install a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro so when the system gets to a threshold engage the fames are a higher RPM and don't push your system to hard to long.

@danj What would be a good temperature limit for the MBP to operate safely away from the T-CON wearing out?

Same problem for me.

In my case if you have no Apple Care and still don’t have money to change it at the reduced cost.

  1. Use external Screen, you may feel your MBP has become a Mac Mini but when you spend time like week or month then back to using the internal screen, this problem will disappear! I can use my system for 2 days and the line doesn’t comeback but I can feel that my systems screen still has the problem.
  2. Seeking for A.R. Coating issue on your screen. If you’re lucky enough to have this problem. Go to Apple Store and claim AR Coating Failure. Apple will change ALL screen parts for you, and yes it free!

@Al alim Channel - Why would you think using an external monitor would matter if the internal displays T-CON is damaged?

The external is getting the signal from the GPU via your USB-C connection, unlike your internal display which is getting the signal via a different pathway.

What you are seeing is what I would expect. - Time to get a new display assembly.

@danj , In fact , I use SwitchResX with external display to disable my internal display but since I turn on mac's display I notice the same problem even worst

I use SwitchResX my self!

It really doesn't turn off the internal display like a light switch turns off your light by removing power to the circuit! This is a software tool that altered the GPU logic by turning off the video signal to the internal display.

Think of it this way... You have a TV which is on but the cable input is not present the screen is black and the TV is still Powered Thats the setup here.

The internal displays logic is still powered, you are still cooking the T-CON!

If you had a IR camera (FLIR camera) you could see the heat.

Sadly its time for a new display assembly ;-{

I would strongly recommend installing a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro it will allow you to pump up the fans over-riding Apples settings (Turbo) so things stay cooler longer.

But, you likely need to make sure your systems cooling is working properly making sure the dust is cleaned out inside and you use your system on flat desk not on blankets or rugs which block the vents.

@danj if I found just the tcon , I can resolve the problem without the need of all the assembly ( it cost >400 dollars)

Sorry just not possible!

Does replacing the display solve the problem ?

@David Amunga - YES!

Does leaving the device off for 3 days solve the issue for around 2-3 months?

I can't answer that specifically, but when I left my Macbook shutdown for a couple weeks due to traveling it did take a few months for the lines to come back.

if the replacement assembly's price is almost equal to the second hand A1708's price this days than what is the point of going for the replacement assembly even if it does temporarily fix the current issue?

aka am I asking a wrong question again ))

I would suggest investing in the good external screen or/and new computer.

Putting the system down for a few weeks seems to help!. Sadly it doesn't solve the issue only postpone the need to change out the display.

I strongly recommend running a good thermal management app like TG Pro I've found this is one of the best! As you can see the current temps and a high water mark, and it offers the ability to crank up the fan's in the correct way.
