I'm trying to program my visio tv remote to my Sony DVD player. My problem is, I'm supposed to hold down the “dvd” button on remote but my remote has no such button.

Not all programmable remotes are capable to be programmed to all other companies, such as Visio to Sony, the chip inside has to understand the language of other companies and they don’t give every company built inside. This is called plug and play, push a button, learn the code and play. Plus you don’t have the DVD button as you noticed. BE CAREFUL when purchasing a universal remote, they are not actually fully universal.
