I found some annoy Screen issue when I shut down may MBP

Nov 23: I went to Apple Authorized Shop to check AR Coating issue, They accepted my case to change screen part.

Nov 27 noon: I got my MBP back with new screen.

Nov 27 night: I found this issue when I shut down. So I restarted many times, found this problem shown 9 in 10 times shut down.

Nov 28 noon: I went back to Authorized Shop again to show this problem to staff. They have check and said this issue can not found when Shut down by Safe Mode. It may cause of some software problem. So they suggested to me to format MBP and reinstall OS. So, I Agreed to do that. After 1 Hour for it to finish. I’ve checked many time by shut down at shop. This problem didn’t show again in that time or I came back and use MBP at home. their was no problem in that night Shut down.

Nov 29 night: This Issue came back again!!! I can claim Screen from Authorized Shop because still have 90 days replacing-part warranty but still concern that may damage from other part. My MBP has no Apple Care. and this issue never show before replace new screen.

I’m having the same problem as well.

@gennina b

first, I've try to degrade to Catalina 10.15

and NOT TO Upgrade Catalina for 10.15.1 or newest at all

this problem GONE, and authorised shop said so.

Catalina so many bugs. I will not upgrade until next MacOS

@ronniejow So it’s a Mac OS Catalina problem? not a hardware one? My MacOS is the most recent one. Upgraded from Mojave. It happens all the time during shutdown. It’s irritating and I can’t have it fixed since my country is currently in lockdown.

Yes it is a Mac OS Catalina problem. My friend was not facing this issue but when he updated to catalina, he started having this issue.

I am.also facing the same issue with my macbook air

Catalina is such a headache.

What did you and your friend do to fix the problem? or did you just leave it be? and wait for the next update? Will this cause damage to the macbook in the long run?

TLDR: this is an issue on 2019 and 2020 MacBook Pro devices running Mac OS Catalina. Fools haven’t fixed this even after releasing six updates

Solution:

These are the culprits. Happens randomly even when one of them is on.

1. Turn off dark theme and select light theme

2. Turn off night shift, ambient light sensor and True Tone

3. Change the default wallpaper to a still image(default wallpaper is heavy for their own OS to load!)

4. Change display settings from default to “more space” (or vice versa). The problem happens for one last time and then doesn’t come back provided you don’t change the settings.

Bought a brand new MacBook pro which has this issue. The only reason I bought this device is for its software and now even their software sucks(see Catalina). Disappointed in apple service, customer care who took no extra effort in helping me solve this problem. Trial and error helped.

I like dark theme and need Night shift most of the time but I can’t use them now. it was a pain looking for tools that Catalina supports without breaking anything. Hope they fix this issue In Catalina and not force us to run Big Sur. Never trusting an apple laptop for our business again!

It works

Thank you

It works.. thank you so much for helping each one of us around... this issue really sucks... I was not expecting such a shoddy work from Apple

I did all the steps as shared by you snd it worked wonders but it has again come back even though I have ensured all the above settings are in place as described by you

Hi Lakshya, that's easy. Just toggle display settings once more and then restart twice

Let me know if you're still having trouble

I have the same problem with my Macbook Screen after display replacement. I took my MBP to Apple authorizes nears my home now and let’s see what happens!

Update (06/25/2020)

The Apple authorizer told me it is not because of hardware, it is software issue. I talk with Apple Support advisor USA, he confirmed it is Catalina 10.15.5 bugs and he asked me to wait for the next Catalina updates and We still can use our MBP as usual.

I now have the same problem but my OS is 10.15.6 and later on tonight they will launch big sur I will try to update it and see does it change anything

same as mine, i got it 2 weeks ago and it still occur, safe mode NVRAM things help but it occured again, let's wait for 42 more minutes to Big Sur @Shaswat Nayak

So, what did the buddy tell u at Apple services, will this damage the computer, or it is just a harmless bug?

Hey. I ve bought my mbair in mar-20. The same issue persists from the day one. Its not a hardware problem, its an OS issue and Apple has been well informed about it. I was also worried and confused whether to change or not. But except this distorted colour appear for a nano second issue my mbair is running smooth. It occurs only during shutdown.

updated to Big Sur but this issue didn't solve .

I also noticed this issue after update to Big Sur, have 2020 MacBook Air. I can live with it right now. Just wondering if it will harm the computer.

Did you try with external display and enable mirroring? İs it happening with external display too. If its not that means we have a hardware issue ı think. Is there anyone tried please let me know.

Yes, you have a defective part! Time to get it fixed at a real Apple Store if you can. This is not a software issue.

The issue is the T-CON board which is part of the display assembly.

Thank you. This helps me a lot.

I just come back from store. They will change the new one for me anyway because I still have 90 days part replacement warrantee . But it feels better to know that.

Hello! What happened after that? When the part was replaced...did the problem go away? I’m actually having the same problem.

Yes, the issue is the display assembly (which the T-CON is part of)

@ronniejow Did the problem solved ?

@Dan I guess this is not the issue. At least I wanna think it is not, as I have just replaced my screen and since I have updated my OS to Catalina, I have been experiencing this issue as well. As the replacement was so recent, a few weeks ago, and the display is not showing those horizontal lines, etc, I very inclined to disagree with this T-CON thing. When I restart the macbook the weird screen does not appear, only on shutdown.

So I had this problem last April til around June. I noticed this problem appeared right after I upgraded from Mojave to Catalina.

Since I tried all the Apple Hardware resets, I opted to downgrade my OS to Mojave again. Since a lot are saying it’s a Catalina Bug problem.

I went back to Mojave last June…and so far (Thank you, Lord) the problem’s gone. :)

same here! after updating it to Big Sur got this problem and it's quite annoying due to the pandemic all stores are limited only.

Accepted answer might be wrong. It's not a hardware issue. It's a bug in Catalina.

On 2019 MacBook pro I was able to get rid of this issue by making a few changes in display settings:

Display settings - toggle between default screen settings and “more space”.

Hope this helps.

I bought the macbook pro last month i have the same problem about the screen since day one and i have updated the os to catalina since the day one . @medstu i ll be helpful if you instruct how to reset electrical static thing. Though i think this is a software fault.

you can search it as NVRAM resetting. you can find the instructions on apples website. first ı shut down the Mac than press the power button. İmmediately after press (option+command+R+P) at the same time. you will see the apple logos two times or you will hear the turning on sound twice. when you saw it you can remove your fingers. Please let me now if it works for you. ı want to ben sure if it's the exact solution

@Ameen Shaheen https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204063 this is the link that might be helpful

Thanks ! yeah sure i ll keep you updated

@medstu its been 2 days since the lastest update for Catalina 10.15.6 and for the resetting of NVRAM. And still, the RGB colors flashes before the screen goes black. This is annoying!

So I just bought (4 days ago) new Macbook pro 2020 with already installed Macos Mojave it was working perfectly so decided to update to Catalina 10.15.07, and at first I was suspicious when i tried downloading it was glitching at first, then i tried update on my old mac (Macbook air 2017), and it was facing the same problem. After update it started to show the signs of “Turn off glitch”, and yesterday i saw for first time doing that, but I realise my Macbook air was doing the same back in June/ August and now. So i realised it was Catalina fault, because it was glitching to start-up screen and then turn off but I didn't suspect that at first, and both Macs was doing the same. At first I thought they gave me defected mac. And both macs can't hold Battery life for to long, because catalina is running so many background apps. What should I do downgrade to Macos Mojave on wait for Big Sur ????????? I'm just anxious if this glitch will damage my pc ?

Because Big sur is still in development versions, so we hope so there will be not the same issue in full realise version, after using my mac for 3 weeks this isn't that common anymore, happens once a week, but still it's big deal for 2000$ Pc....

And one of the biggest bugs Catalina 10.15.7 have is the Battery drain problem , so i hope they fix this too.

Issue is still persisting in big sur, please someone help, apple centre saying it's not a software problem

Issue still persist in Monterey latest Version, after upgrading from Big Sur to Monterey, issue was fixed and smooth shutdown but after update to latest version 12.2.1, same issue occur again screen hold for some minor second and colors fade...

Hey. have you got it fixed?

I'm facing the same problem in my MacBook Pro 2019 and I don’t know if I should worry about it.

I'm starting to get convinced that this is not an issue at all, maybe just a bug.

I don’t believe apple ever figured out the problem. I went through 5 new laptops in a month and every single one had issues. 2 dell xps laptops thought I lived in Houston. Their customer service was a nightmare. So I bought another MacBook from micro center and noticed it right away. Customer service opened a claim and told me to exchange it.

Then I had the same problem with the new one and was told to go to the Genius Bar but they couldn’t help and told me exchange it again. The third one still had the problem. Customer service said my service claim would remain open after the warranty expired so I let it go. It doesn’t affect performance but it’s annoying. Also I haven’t heard of this problem on the newer M1 MacBooks.
