Get a new motherboard?

My RAM is fine, but when it gets seated, very little time passes before the System decides I only have GB. Someone told me that I should replace my motherboard. Does this seem to be a probable solution?

Can you clarify how much RAM you have and what the system reports.

As an example: you put in 8 GB of RAM but only 4 GB is seen.

That’s exactly it, Dan I have 8MB installed, but Apple System Profiler says 4MB I was told this means that I need a new motherboard. On a couple of occasions I re-placed the RAM, but after a few days it stops showing in the ASP

Ahhh, THAT is what ya call

My building-ham radio days were an entire lifetime ago (hopefully it’ll turn out to be half a lifetime...), so as always climbing inside an expensive kit like this is roughly equal to calling that girl back, in terror magnitudes; however, the old digits did remember the fine motor days of yore. So to clarify your RAM socket lock clips are worn or the socket it’s self is distorted. While a new logic board might help lets see if we can save you a few bucks here.

  • Sometimes wedging a piece of a credit card stock between the socket wall and the clip can force it more forward so the edge of the SO-DIMM is captured.
  • To deal with a distorted socket (the logic board has warped due to heat) try loosing the screws a 1/4 turn.
