My wife does drop her phone fairly often, so I’m assuming I have a hardware failure. Is it enough to replace the charging port hardware on a iphone 6s to resolve this charging problem? With the phone powered off, it powers on when plugged into the apple charger but doesn’t charge the battery (no lightning bolt).

If the phone turns on after inserting the charging cable I would suspect it would be a charging circuit problem. You would need to rule out parts first.
Replace the battery and make sure it is connected properly. If it still shows the same symptoms it would point to a faulty charging circuit IC, probable Tristar.
This repair would require a repair shop that offers microsoldering. You might want to consider spending the money on a newer model phone. But first I would rule out parts, a new battery is not that expensive.
