Replaced digitizer - now phone shorts USB or charger

I just replaced a broken digitizer/screen for a friend on his 3GS and now when I close up shop and try to charge the phone, it shorts out/overloads the charger. On a PC, it pops up that the USB Power has been exceeded, and on a wall charger it goes into overcurrent mode.

This does not occur if I plug the charger in with the screen connected (connectors 1, 2 and 3) but not closed up (screen just hanging there). It seems to be some type of short by the screen assembly. If I hook the top in and leave the bottom open the issue doesn't happen, if I leave the bottom in and the top open, it doesn't happen, but as soon as I fully seat the screen, the power cuts off.

Also, should the battery charge if the screen is completely disconnected? I'd like to get a charge into the thing and then connect the screen and see if it will turn on at all. Even with the screen open and the charger apparently working OK, I cannot get the phone to power up.

Thanks for any insight!

you haven't moved the motherboard at all?

why don't you take some photo's of the display back and the inside of this phone then we might be able to see what is causing this. take your photo (jpeg/pdf etc)then click on the little orange box in the corner of the screen "images" and upload. (sorry if you knew that but I think it's ridiculously easy to not see it!)

Do you know the health of this iPhone before the repair? I have never heard of this reaction to a 3G digitizer, is the digitizer definitely 3GS. Repair persons have described strange shorts with damaged #3. A connector #4 issue does not make sense here, but since nothing makes sense, make sure connector #4 is seated correctly.

the only thing I can think of is the top screw on the back of the midframe (you slide the LCD under it) is this protruding? you have the right screw? The LCD is pretty flush if it's in that midframe properly..the only part that sticks out would be the earpiece, the screw I mentioned, or that you have not put the motherboard in properly (that's if you have taken it out..) try removing the screw on the back of the LCD and see if that makes a difference. If you have taken the motherboard out try putting the sim in..if it won't go in then the motherboard is the fault here.

you can charge the phone without the display on. I would be very cautious about fiddling about with your display on..backlight in this puppy is very delicate!

I haven't moved the motherboard, and everything looks like its seated properly. I disconnected and reseated connectors 1-3, 4, and 7 to be sure, same issue.

Unfortunately I don't know for certain the health of the phone before the repair. I neglected to try to charge it and turn it on before digging in, taking my buddy at his word (which is impeccable) that the phone was working fine other than a cracked glass (digitizer still worked).

I did use all the screws and in their proper places and nothing seems to be protruding. I can snap some pics and upload in a little bit.

When you say I can charge without the display on, are you confirming that I can leave connectors 1 2 and 3 disconnected, and the whole LCD/screen assembly separated from the motherboard and other guts and plug that part in and charge? I was confused because of your comment about fiddling with the display on.

As long as no.4 is connected then yes the battery will charge. You don't need the display in place

Hrm that's not good then.. I don't think its charging either.. gotta dig out the meter but I think whatever short is causing the problem shorted something else somewhere (not a good starting point). =/
