How can I dislodge a stuck CD from the CD/DVD drive slot?

For no reason I ended up getting a music CD lodged in my CD/DVD drive (slot). It will not come out with the usual restarting while holding down the eject key. If I try to eject it by any of the desktop, menu or keyboard options, the icon will go away as if it is ejected but the disk will continue to make a clicking sound over and over again. It will not come out. If I restart, it will continue making that sound as well. It sound as if it is about to eject but won't. I can stop the clicking by inserting a stiff piece of paper in the slot and moving it around until the disk stops clicking.

I have tried all of the know methods to eject the stuck CD including the mouse button technique. I have since taken my iMac to a Genius Bar for their help. They said the drive had to be removed and pried apart to get the disk out. The optical drive would then have to be replaced. Problem is they said it would take 5-7 days. I can't wait that long as this is the computer I make my living on. Then I see there are no repair manuals on this web site for my unit EMC2134. Does anyone know how to take this iMac apart and reinstall a new optical drive? I can probably order one faster than the Apple store and do it myself. The warranty has already expired anyway so it's not like I would be voiding anything.

I could try the double sided tape suggestion but from what I've read, that was for having two disk stuck in one drive. I only have one disk stuck and it would appear that I would have to replace the drive anyway.

The sticky tape works with either one or two disks, even the "mini" (credit card size) disks.

I don't know who you are but you are BRILLIANT!!!! For weeks my cd drive on my Mac would not release the disc. After trying everything I took it to Mac. Well to start one of the geniuses called my perfectly good laptop "vintage" and then proceeded to tell me that they couldn't get it out and it would cost me $112 because I need a new optical drive and it probably has gone bad. Not believing a word of what was said I decided to take my laptop home. WELL...after finding your helpful suggestion with the sticky tape I finally pulled out TWO disks!! Turns out my daughter had been a little impatient and wanted to watch a Barbie movie right away lol.

YAHOO! After 3 years, and the purchase of an external drive, I FINALLY got the disc out with tape. I used gorilla tape and asked Siri to eject it at the same time. When I heard the “rrrr” I pulled. Keyboard commands had not worked. Happiness! Than you.

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run:

drutil eject

Alternatively, restart with the mouse button held down.

You may have to open it up if all else fails and open the optical drive. Are you sure of how many disks are in it?

Why do I hate taking repairs to the Apple Store? They also said that it would take 5-7 days for the service. Which means sending it off somewhere. If I have good instructions I could do it myself. To bad none exist for my model.

The links you provided are the best instructions I've seen. I hear the front glass is very sensitive to breakage, expensive to replace and not easy to remove. There are no screws. Does it just snap out with suction cups? What's holding it in place? Will it go back on tight?

The slot drive that's installed is no longer available as far as I can tell. Pioneer does not even have it on their website. Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A, is what is jammed right now. The disc image shows up on the desktop and I can still play the CD that is stuck in it. Seems to be a mechanical malfunction keeping it jammed. Anyway, I can't find out what model replaces my current optical drive. Can't even find a website that list slot drives for my computer model.

The placement of the Display Data cable on your machine is different. To remove pull the cable directly away from the back of the power supply. Toward the back of the frame, (away from you). Use the double sticky tape trick

. Get and old CD/DVD and some thin double sticky tape like they use to hold down window plastic or photos in an album.

Put two strips of tape side by side on 1/2 the old cd/dvd (plull off the cover for the second side of adhesive). Slide the CD/DVD less than 1/2 way into the slot on top of the jammed disk, push down or angle down to snatch the jammed disk and pull it out.

As for the sticky tape method, I cannot see the disk at all with the felt in the slot, and I really don't know which sided the disc is on. Front or back side? I can slide a card in the slot and feel a mechanism move near the top of the slot when trying to eject. But I still don't know which side the disc is on. I was wondering if the tape method would work if it is lodged in the center for some reason. Or, if a mechanical part is stuck in the way. I suppose I have nothing to lose at this point. I might give this a try. Does this mean the drive should be replaced anyway since it became jammed in the first place?

Yes the drive is fubar - put the tape on 1/4 of one side of an old/damaged disk, angle the disk slightly as you push it into the drive, then tilt the other direction to "snag" the disk so you can pull it out. IMnsHO you'll want to tag the TOP of the stuck disk, not the bottom. Good Luck. BTW if this works for you please accept the answer. N.

I just tried the sticky tape method and it worked a treat!

The computer wouldn't even attempt to eject the DVD, which stopped playing. I got a message that it was skipping over a damaged portion, but it just kept whirring. following the advice on another web page, I pulled up the disk utility and it showed the disk even though the icon had disappeared. There was a place to click on "Eject disk" and I clicked on it. The computer finally ejected it. Whew!

Try the two card trick

I have had some success with this on MacBooks and MacBook Pros. It works best if you can see the disc being prepared for ejection (It sort of lifts off a base and lines up with the loading slot) but failing and being put back in a park position. Insert two plastic cards (library, credit cards, or similar) into the slot and try to hold them as far apart as possible. The idea is to try and get one above the disc being ejected and one below it and, after pressing the eject button, you should be able to grip the disc with the two cards and slowly pull it out. It takes a fair bit of patience and an extra pair of eyes/hands make the process easier.

Can't use this method. Cannot get anything including a thin playing card behind what I think is the disc. Can't see it at all. Can't angle the card enough to go towards the back.

thank you so much! i was about to open up my imac but tried this method and after 3 tries, i had the disk in my hand ! and the best part is that the drive doesnt seem broken, it now plays and ejects other cd's like it should.Thanks!

When I inserted the CD, I could tell right away it just didn't feel "right". It did not show up on my desktop.

I tried eject, "drutil eject" in Terminal, restart, paperclip and tried to push another CD in just a bit to see if it could work.

None of these did. But double stick tape on both sides of a CD trick worked great.

Also, my drive still seems fine.

If you look on the front panel of the drive then you will see a pinhole sized hole. Insert a straightened paper clip or similar into the hole and the door will slide open. If it still fails to work after that then its time for a new drive. At least you can get whatever disk is in there out in the meantime.
