My 30 yr old Cuisinart cookware set is in perfect condition, except on of the lid top knobs became loose, has slight splits, and came off. How can I save the knob and reattach safely? There is a post on the lid; it does not screw on.

This is an old question but I thought I'd answer since its an easy fix. It looks like you have a machine screw going into a wooden knob. (There may have been in insert that was lost over the years.) I think the easiest fix is to get a replacement wood screw. If you take the lid and knob to your local hardware store they will be happy to show you what you need.
